What's here

The first thing you see are the mountains. They fill the windows, the balcony, the sky. This is a simple, solid home built on a hillside, facing the high peaks of the Western Himalaya. The air is thin and quiet up here. The home has seven private rooms, each with a king bed and its own attached bathroom. The bathrooms are functional, with a geyser for hot water. The rooms are kept warm and cosy, and the hosts provide extra blankets for the cold Lahaul nights. Some rooms have an attached balcony, a good place to sit with a cup of tea. There's a small, shared dining area where the family serves meals. The hosts live here and run the home themselves. They are, in the words of one guest, "extremely kind, courteous and accomodating." Another guest felt they "took care of us a their own family member." It's the kind of place people come to for a long, quiet stay, to work or to just be. This home is a base for exploring the high-altitude valleys of Lahaul and Spiti.

The Atal Tunnel is the modern marvel that connects this valley to Manali year-round. A drive through the 9km tunnel is an experience in itself, emerging from the green Kullu side into the stark, grand landscape of Lahaul. Solang Valley, on the Manali side, is a hub for adventure sports.

For those with more time, this is the gateway to the Spiti circuit. The road from here continues to Kaza, Ki Monastery, and some of the highest villages in the world, like Kibber. This route is typically open only from June to October.

The main town of Manali is on the other side of the tunnel. There, you can visit the Hadimba Devi temple, a wooden structure in a cedar forest, explore the cafes of Old Manali, or visit the Vashisht hot springs.

Getting there.

By Air: The nearest airport is Bhuntar Airport (KUU) in Kullu, which has limited flights and is weather-dependent. The most reliable major airport is Chandigarh International Airport (IXC), from where it is a long, multi-hour drive.

By Rail: The nearest major railway station is in Chandigarh. From there, you will need to hire a taxi or take a bus for the journey into the mountains.

By Road: Lahaul is accessed by road from Manali via the Atal Tunnel. Manali is the main road hub for the region, with bus and taxi services connecting it to Chandigarh, Delhi, and other parts of North India.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The clearest weather is from September to November, when the skies are blue and the mountain views are sharp. March through June is also a good time, as the snow begins to melt and summer arrives in the valley.

The monsoon months of July and August can bring heavy rain and increase the risk of landslides on the highways. From December to February, the region sees heavy snowfall, and while the Atal Tunnel keeps Lahaul connected, many internal roads may be closed.
