The home is a base for exploring the Lahaul and Spiti valleys. Manali is the gateway, and the Atal Tunnel makes Lahaul accessible for much of the year.
Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel are on the way from Manali. The 9km-long tunnel is an engineering feat, cutting travel time to Lahaul from hours to minutes and bypassing the treacherous Rohtang Pass.
The Spiti Valley loop is a classic Himalayan road trip, accessible from here between June and October. This high-altitude desert is home to ancient monasteries like Ki and Tabo, and high villages like Kibber and Kaza. A permit is required for the full loop into Kinnaur.
Manali town itself is a few hours' drive away. You can visit the ancient Hadimba Devi temple, built around a cave and surrounded by deodar forest, explore the cafes of Old Manali, or soak in the Vashisht hot springs.
The home is in the Lahaul valley of Himachal Pradesh.
By Air: The nearest airport is in Bhuntar (KUU), serving the Kullu-Manali valley. However, flights are limited and weather-dependent. The most reliable all-weather airport is Chandigarh (IXC), a major city in the plains, from where it is a full day's drive.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is in Chandigarh (CDG). From there, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Manali, and then onward to Lahaul.
By Road: Manali is the main road hub for the region. The home is reached by driving on NH-3 from Manali through the Atal Tunnel. The journey through the mountains is scenic but slow.
The best seasons are from March to June, when the snow begins to melt and the valleys turn green, and again from September to November, for crisp air and clear post-monsoon skies.
July and August are the monsoon months, which can cause landslides on the highways (NH-3 and NH-21) leading to the region. The high passes to Spiti are generally open from June to October. December through February sees heavy snowfall, which can limit access but offers a starkly beautiful landscape for those prepared for the cold.
