Manali is the hub of the Kullu valley and a gateway to the high-altitude deserts of Lahaul and Spiti. A short drive takes you to the Solang valley, known for its adventure sports, and the engineering marvel of the Atal Tunnel, a 9km-long tunnel that provides year-round access to Lahaul.
Within Manali itself, you can visit the ancient Hadimba Devi temple, a wooden structure set in a cedar forest. Explore the cafes and small shops of Old Manali, which has a distinct, laid-back feel. A short drive or a steady walk will also take you to the Vashisht village, known for its natural hot springs and stone temples. For the more adventurous, Manali is the starting point for the Spiti loop, a stunning road trip through Kaza, Ki monastery, and Kibber, accessible from June to October.
The nearest airport is Bhuntar Airport (KUU) in Kullu, about 50 km from Manali. Flights here are limited and weather-dependent. The most reliable and larger airport is Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport in Chandigarh (IXC), which is about a 9-10 hour drive away.
The closest major railhead is in Chandigarh. From there, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Manali. The scenic Kalka-Shimla toy train (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) connects to Kalka, but this route is best for those heading to Shimla, not Manali.
Manali is well-connected by road via National Highway 3. Regular overnight buses run from Delhi and Chandigarh. The drive through the hills is scenic but can be long.
The best time to visit Manali is from March to June, when the snow melts and the weather is pleasant for summer trekking and sightseeing. A second window opens from September to November, offering clear skies and crisp mountain air after the monsoon has passed.
The monsoon months of July and August are best avoided, as heavy rains can cause landslides on the highways. Winter, from December to February, brings heavy snowfall, which can be beautiful but may also lead to road closures and very cold temperatures.
