Barog is a quiet stop on the way to bigger destinations, but it holds its own charm, primarily through its connection to the region's history.
The Kalka-Shimla Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the most scenic way to travel into the hills. The toy train chugs through more than a hundred tunnels and over countless bridges, and the Barog station is one of its most famous halts.
Shimla, the state capital, is a short drive away. It’s a classic Indian hill station with colonial architecture, The Ridge, and the bustling Mall Road.
For those driving up from the plains, the home serves as a good first stop to acclimatize before heading deeper into the Himalayas towards places like Manali or the valleys of Lahaul and Spiti, accessible via the Atal Tunnel.
By Air: The most reliable airport is Chandigarh (IXC), a major hub in the plains. Shimla’s Jubbarhatti airport (SLV) is closer but has very limited, weather-dependent flights.
By Rail: The nearest broad-gauge railhead is Kalka, which connects all major Indian cities. From Kalka, you can either drive or take the scenic toy train up to Barog and Shimla. Chandigarh (CDG) is the other major, reliable railhead.
By Road: Barog sits directly on National Highway 5, the main road connecting Chandigarh to Shimla. It is a common stop for travellers driving up into Himachal Pradesh.
The best seasons are from March to June, when the snow has melted and summer arrives, and again from September to November, for clear skies after the monsoon. The monsoon months of July and August can bring heavy rain and landslides on the national highways. From December to February, the upper reaches around Shimla and Manali receive snowfall.
